According to recent studies, Canada is facing a homelessness crisis, with an estimated 235,000 Canadians experiencing homelessness in a given year
. The Canadian government has implemented a community-based program called Reaching Home: Canada's Homelessness Strategy, which aims to prevent and reduce homelessness across Canada by providing funding to urban, Indigenous, rural, and remote communities to help them address their local homelessness needs.
The government has nearly doubled its investments in Reaching Home from over $2 billion over 9 years to nearly $4 billion in federal funding since its launch in April 2019. However, experts suggest that the funding is not sufficient to address the problem and has not led to a noticeable reduction in homelessness.
The lack of affordable housing, rising inflation, and stagnant wages are some of the factors contributing to the homelessness crisis. The only cure for homelessness is housing, and the government needs to invest more in affordable housing to address the crisis
