Common physical changes during puberty

Puberty is a time of significant physical changes for young people. Here are some common physical changes that occur during puberty:

Girls

  • Breast development: The first sign of puberty in girls is usually breast development, which typically begins between the ages of 8 and 13.
  • Body hair: Girls may also begin to grow pubic and underarm hair.
  • Menstruation: Menstruation usually begins around two years after the start of breast development.

Boys

  • Testicular and penis growth: The first sign of puberty in boys is usually testicular growth, which typically begins between the ages of 9 and 14. Penis growth usually follows shortly after.
  • Body hair: Boys may also begin to grow pubic, underarm, and facial hair.
  • Voice changes: Boys' voices may become deeper as their vocal cords lengthen and thicken.

Both Girls and Boys

  • Acne: Hormonal changes during puberty can cause acne breakouts.
  • Growth spurts: Both girls and boys may experience rapid growth spurts during puberty.
  • Body shape changes: Girls may develop wider hips and a more defined waist, while boys may develop broader shoulders and a more muscular physique.
It's important to remember that every child is different and may experience puberty at different rates and in different ways. If you have concerns about your child's physical development during puberty, talk to their pediatrician or GP.
